On March 22, King was found guilty of violating the Alabama boycott law. His supporters cheered their courageous hero. King’s proud wife, Coretta, gave him a kiss on the cheek (pictured) outside the courthouse.

By this point, King was inspiring people across the nation. Donations for the MIA’s taxi service poured in from all over the world. More good news came on April 23. That day, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that bus segregation in South Carolina was illegal. After that ruling, bus companies in more than a dozen southern cities ended segregated seating on their buses. Montgomery was not among them. Segregation continued in that city, as did the boycott.
